How to write a profile people reply to

A good profile makes it easy for the right people to say hello. Most members decide within a few seconds whether to read more, so a clear, friendly and honest profile can make all the difference to the replies you get. This guide shows you what to include, what to leave out and how to sound like yourself.

Start with the basics

Say clearly who you are and who you would like to meet. If you are a couple, say so, and mention your ages and roughly where you are based. If you are single, say whether you are a man or a woman and whether you are looking to meet couples, singles or both. People should not have to guess, because a profile that leaves questions unanswered usually gets passed over.

Write a short, warm introduction

Aim for a few short paragraphs rather than a long essay. Open with something personal and positive, such as what you enjoy, what you do in your spare time or what you like about meeting new people. Humour helps, as long as it is kind. A line that makes the reader smile is much more memorable than a list of requirements.

Avoid copying the same phrases everyone else uses. Think about what makes you or your relationship different, and say that in your own words. It is fine to be a little shy on the page, but try to give people something to reply to, such as a shared interest or a question.

Be honest and specific

Honesty is the best approach, and it also saves time. Say how experienced you are, whether that means brand new, curious or very experienced. Mention what kind of connection you want, whether that is a chat, a drink, regular friends or something more. Be clear about your limits, for example if you prefer to stay together as a couple or only want to meet socially to begin with.

Specific details are more useful than general ones. Instead of saying you like to have fun, say that you enjoy good food, live music and relaxed evenings out. It gives people something real to talk about and helps them decide whether you will get on.

Choose your photos carefully

Photos matter a great deal. Use clear, recent pictures that look like you, with good lighting and a friendly expression. If you are a couple, include at least one photo of you both. You do not need to show your face in every picture if you value discretion, but profiles with a clear photo tend to feel more trustworthy and usually receive more messages.

Never use photos of other people, and never post anything that would identify someone who has not agreed to it. If you complete the free ID verification on the site, you will also get a blue tick, which tells other members you are who you say you are and often encourages more replies.

Protect your privacy

Keep personal details such as your address, workplace, full name and phone number private until you really trust someone. You can share more over time, and a good match will understand why you are careful. Think about what is visible in the background of your photos too, such as street names, work badges or recognisable landmarks.

Finish with an invitation

End with a friendly line that invites a reply, such as a question or a suggestion for what to talk about first. Something simple like asking what someone enjoys doing at the weekend works well. When people write to you, reply politely, even if it is only to say no thanks. Respectful, relaxed members build a good reputation quickly.

Keep it fresh

Revisit your profile every so often. Update your photos, add a new interest and check that what you have written still reflects what you want. A profile that feels current shows that you are active and engaged, and that is exactly what people look for when they decide who to contact.
